When you are answering the Privacy Policy questionnaire, you will be asked whether you want to provide Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) rights to Canada residents only or to everyone that visits your website or application, regardless of location. PIPEDA provides the following privacy rights to residents of Canada:
- The right to access the personal information that a business has collected about them;
- The right to request that the business amend or correct any of the personal information it has collected about them;
- The right to withdraw consent from the processing of their personal information; and
- The right to lodge a complaint regarding the processing of their personal information.
By law, these rights are provided to residents of Canada only. However, some businesses may want to provide these rights to every website visitor as doing so can:
- Prevent the work inherent in confirming the individual's place of residence when they request to exercise their privacy rights;
- Reduce the confusion of individuals as to what privacy rights apply to them;
- Help reduce the length of your Privacy Policy, especially if you have to comply with multiple privacy laws.
To answer this question, select whether you'd like to offer the above privacy rights to Canada residents only or to everyone that visits your website or application, regardless of location.
