When you are answering the Privacy Policy questionnaire, you will be asked whether you want to offer Rhode Island Data Transparency and Privacy Protection Act (DTPPA) rights to residents of Rhode Island only or to everyone that visits your website or application, regardless of location. The DTPPA provides the following privacy rights to residents of Rhode Island: 

  • The right to confirm whether a business is processing their personal information; 

  • The right to access the personal information that a business holds about them; 

  • The right to request the amendment of their personal information; 

  • The right to request the deletion of some or all of their personal information; 

  • The right to receive the personal information that a business holds about them in a portable and, to the extent feasible, a readily usable format that allows the consumer to transmit this information to another entity; 

  • The right to opt out of sales of personal information; 

  • The right to opt out of the use of their personal information for the purposes of profiling in furtherance of decisions that could produce legal or similarly significant effects; 

  • The right to opt out of targeted advertising; 

  • The right to not be discriminated against based upon the exercise of privacy rights. 


The DTPPA provides these rights to residents of Rhode Island only. However, some businesses may want to provide these rights to every website or application visitor as doing so can: 

  • Prevent the work inherent in confirming the individual’s place of residence when they request to exercise their privacy rights; 

  • Reduce the confusion of individuals as to what privacy rights apply to them; 

  • Help reduce the length of your Privacy Policy, especially if you have to comply with multiple privacy laws.
